A daytrip to Taroko Gorge National Park

From Hualien, we arranged a day trip to Taroko National Park, where a river cut a beautiful gorge through the mountains. The first stop on the trip was a view point where the mountains meet the coast just before turning inland into the park. The first stop in the park was the Eternal Spring Shrine, where a flat trail leads all the way to the shrine. At the shrine there is a short but very steep trail up the mountain. The palaces of Berau

Coming back from Derawan, we stayed half a day in Berau until our flights out of Kalimantan in the next morning. Berau is a busy little city and seems to profit quite well from the mining and logging industries. There are a couple of sites worth a visit, most famous are the two palaces (keratons) of Gunung Tabur and Sambaliung. Gunung Tabur is still inhabited by the daughter of the last sultan of Berau, and she is in her early 90s. Kuala Lumpur – Batu Caves + delicious food

On our way to Indonesia, we met halfway in Kuala Lumpur and had a day there. In the late morning, we took the subway to the Batu Caves, a collection of natural limestone caves that house several Hindu temples just 30 minutes north of the city centre. The entrance of the caves line two massive statues, a green Hanuman and the world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan being 42.7m high.
