Crystal Cove State Park, California

A short trip brought me to southern California, more precisely to the tiny suburb of Lake Forest located between Los Angeles and San Diego. There is not much going on there, but it is very close to the coast and to the Crystal Cove State Park. The park comprises a long stretch of sandy beach and a much bigger area inland which is quite hilly. With the sun up and burning, we sticked to beach part and enjoyed a walk on the shore. We came back  in the evening for the sunset, which was beautiful. Parking can be a bit

Twelve Apostles at sunset

We pitched our tent in Port Campbell for the night and then headed out to the Twelve Apostles for the sunset. It’s a nice experience to go down to the beach at Gibson Steps since it makes you grasp the Apostles’ size much better than by looking at them from above. Also, there are far fewer people around than in the daytime, which makes the visit much more quiet. Here are some pictures from the stroll on the beach between the Gibson Steps and the viewing platform for the Apostles. Picture gallery

Possums in Melbourne

A wonderful thing about Melbourne is that the parks are packed with possums! You can see the cute little climbers waking up in the trees shortly after sunset. They are usually quite interested in the observer, hoping you brought some food with you. I doubt that human-food does them any good, but you can tell by the slices of toast bread on the trees, that they definitely don’t reject it. Still, it’s a bad idea, some naughty possums are apparently quite skilled in raiding picnics. Picture gallery

Kutai NP – Boat trip to the delta

On our last day in Kutai NP, we joined another couple for a boat ride to the Sangatta river delta. It’s possible to see proboscis monkeys on the trip, the ones with the funny noses, but unfortunately, we didn’t see any. Nevertheless, the trip was fantastic, even though the small wooden motorboat proved not to be very comfortable for a 6 hour boat ride. During the trip, the shore of the river changed from rainforest to mangroves. We did see lots of makak monkeys, a crocodile, and several lizards. And going through the city of Sangatta was a lot of

Yosemite: Full moon rising at Sentinel Dome

On our way down from the tunnel view lookout, another hiker told us about a full moon rising hike to Sentinel Dome later this night. Since it was already quite late, we had to make the decision instantly to drive up Glacier Point Road to the meeting point. At first, I was a bit worried about losing our campsite at Summerdale by showing up past midnight. But luckily, my partner convinced me to take the opportunity of this one and only chance to see the sunset and the full moon rising from the tops of the Yosemite peaks. So instead
