A day in Samarinda

A day in Samarinda

Between Kutai NP and Derawan island, we made a one day stop in Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan. We got the exit seats on the 5h bus ride from Sangatta, so we arrived quite exhausted and treated us a nicer hotel right in the city center. Samarinda has about 750,000 inhabitants. Thus, there is an abundance of street food carts, selling all sorts of Tofu, Tempeh and fried Bananas. And after 3 nights in Kutai with our sad ramen noddle dinners, we were more than ready to enjoy them as much as we could.

We spent most of the day walking around the city center, trying out different food, and visited the harbor, with the huge coal ships giving hints of what the main business of the city is. Among the food options, we most enjoyed fried Tofu with sprouts and peanut sate, served with cucumber and chips. Also, we discovered a stand that sold Tahu Isi, fried tofu bags stuffed with all sorts of vegetables. Very delicious!
